Overview

The Disaster Response Coordinator will act as a liaison on behalf of Upbring Disaster Response working closely with synods, districts, congregations and community partners to ensure timely and accurate communication of disaster response activities.  This position will assist in the coordination of volunteer and donation requests and activities; preparedness and disaster response education; and work closely with local long-term recovery committees and VOADs to represent Upbring Disaster Response.  There is 50% travel in this role.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Develop strategies and tools to ensure regular and clear communication with synods, districts, congregations, community partners and Lutheran Disaster Response on response activities and opportunities
  • Educate and provide trainings to local congregations, community partners, districts and synods to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters
  • Participate in local VOAD and long-term recovery committees
  • Act as the main point of contact for volunteer and donation requests and coordination
  • Develop and deliver volunteer communications and materials
  • Maintain a database of volunteer contacts and provide post-trip follow-up with volunteer teams
  • Outreach to impacted congregations to provide support and coordinated response efforts and develop engagement opportunities for congregations to participate in local recovery efforts
  • Participate in synod and district meetings as necessary
  • Prepare monthly reports on activities

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships and partnerships with congregations, community partners and district and synod leadership as well as volunteers
  • Work as Disaster Response subject matter expert, team player and exhibit professional behavior and a positive attitude with both internal and external stakeholders that reflects positively on the agency and is consistent with highlighted policies and practices
  • Will travel 50% or more of the time to various impacted locations
  • Must have reliable transportation, current insurance, clean MVR and valid driver’s license

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1-2 years of experience in Emergency/Crisis Management, Public Safety, Disaster Response, Social Services or closely related field
  • Working knowledge of faith based relief and recovery efforts
  • Highly organized with proven track record of writing, communication, presentation and problem-solving skills
  • Strong working knowledge of Disaster Response at the local, state and federal level
  • Strong time management with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and people skills with the ability to work independently, within a team environment and with a diverse group of people
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree emergency/crisis management, public safety, disaster response, social services or a related field
  • 2-4 years of experience in emergency/crisis management, disaster response, public safety or a relevant field that included developing and administering emergency management plans and preparedness and recovery programs
  • Certifications in emergency management/public safety/ disaster response or relevant field
  • Experience mobilizing small to large scale disaster relief/response volunteer populations
