Responsibilities

General Description:     

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) Shift supervisor is responsible for providing a safe, structured, environment that meets the needs of the Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) while maintaining professional and acceptable boundaries at all times.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure the safety of residents and co-workers.
  • Immediately contact Assistant Program Director on containments, runaways or serious incidents.
  • Ensure adequate coverage for your shift. Receive shift change and check living unit. Orient new shift staff to living unit and notify the Assistant Program Director about inadequate coverage, if necessary.
  • Coordinate, delegate and monitor various duties throughout the shift.
  • Communicate with staff and supervisors on other living units and utilize resources such as back-up coverage, activities off campus, etc.
  • Coordinate and approve breaks for staff during shift.
  • Notify Assistant Program Director if coverage for the on-coming shift is needed, never leaving unit out of ratio.
  • Review shift change duties with staff at every shift change.
  • Document all physical containments, escorts, transports, runaways, and/or staff or resident injuries on appropriate incident reports.
  • Ensure individual structures are carried out (i.e. A.W.O.L., room restrictions, shutdowns, etc.).
  • Follow the activities schedule and document on appropriate form(s).
  • Coordinate and supervise residents during off-campus recreational activities when necessary.
  • Ensure groups, quiet times, wake-ups and bed-times are all carried out at appropriate times.
  • Document resident receipt of personal hygiene kits.
  • Keep living unit (living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.) clean and orderly.
  • Complete progress notes for each resident and update motivation system (points system) process.
  • Solicit and give constructive feedback to co-workers concerning work habits, communication and safety habits.
  • Assist with the intake process and complete inventories of residents' personal belongings.
  • Transport residents using Agency vehicles.
  • Ensure proper medication is dispensed and documented on night and weekend shifts.
  • Mentor and assist new hires and coworkers during general observation training period. Report progress to Assistant Program Director.
  • Some driving required.

Additional Functions:

  • Perform other duties as directed.

Qualifications

 

  • High school diploma or GED required and a minimum of one (1) year employment experience in the child welfare field working with children and/or adolescents in a social services setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in Spanish and English languages required.
  • Possess maturity, sense of confidence and emotional stability.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and development preferred.
  • Ability to set and enforce behavioral limits.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Possess sensitivity to the service population's cultural and socio-economic characteristics.
  • Ability to establish a respectful relationship with persons served in order to help them gain skills and confidence.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members, service providers and professionals.
  • Capacity to maintain a helping role and to intervene appropriately in order to meet service goals.
  • Value a nurturing family as the ideal environment for a person.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to empowering others to solve their own problems.
  • Demonstrate a conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change.
  • Ability to function independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to accomplish multiple tasks during shift of duty requiring stooping, bending, and lifting.
  • Ability to lift 120 pounds safely with assistance.
  • Ability to safely accomplish, with or without assistance, physically and emotionally demanding containment of a client, when necessary, using proper techniques.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have an excellent driving record.
  • Have a commitment to the purpose, objectives, and goals of the Agency.
