  • Overview

    The Teacher is responsible for the planning, implementation, and administration of curriculum that is developed and facilitated for Unaccompanied Children (UC) in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Duties 

    • Design lesson plans for UCs of mixed ages for the purpose meeting individual physical disabilities, learning style, and pace of learning
    • Teach Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, English as a Second Language according to ORR requirements, program policies and administrative regulations
    • Create, foster, and maintain a physical environment that is conducive for learning and optimal growth and development; promote social interaction with all UCs
    • Evaluate and document developmental progress and challenges
    • Plan and implement classroom activities based on individual needs of UCs and goals set forth
    • Observe and address challenging behaviors and redirect them to a more positive behavior
    • Complete and prepare teaching materials and related reports, such as, but not limited to classroom activities, individual UC observations, and program records for the purpose of documenting UC activities as prescribed in the work plan
    • Establish and follow policies and procedures for inside and outside classroom environments for UCs to follow
    • Maintain classroom management and discipline using developmentally appropriate techniques
    • Plan daily activities to meet instruction and developmental goals, individualized instruction, and component integration
    • Provide constant supervision of UCs during indoor and outdoor activities; provide and fosters a safe and secure environment for UCs indoors and outdoors
    • Respond to emergency situations and/or direct to appropriate management team member or program administration for immediate resolution
    • Complete and maintain accurate documentation, files, and records (including lesson plans/transcripts/report cards) as required
    • Provide instruction to up to 24 UC in a classroom setting.
    • Other duties and special projects as assigned

    Working Relationships

    • Assist with the collaborative efforts and activities with the interdisciplinary and treatment teams to ensure all residents are receiving the quality of services needed to meet their individual treatment and behavior plans
    • Build and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, program staff, inter-disciplinary teams, volunteers, and service providers to ensure the needs of the resident and program goals and services are being met at the highest quality
    • Work as team player and exhibit professional behavior and a positive attitude with both internal and external clients that reflect positively on the Agency and is consistent with Agency policies and practices and code of ethics

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
    • Successful completion of the appropriate teacher training through an approved program 
    • Valid Generalist (Grades EC-4) or other teacher certification required by the State of Texas
    • Minimum of one year of classroom teaching experience
    • Must be at least 21 years of age
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement curriculum
    • Demonstrated ability to manage the classroom and work well under pressure
    • Ability to build a positive rapport with children, parents/guardians, and team members
    • Strong computer skills; high proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally, interact with all levels of management in a clear and concise manner
    • Prepare quality well written documents, reports, and correspondence
    • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize competing tasks, requests, and projects and meet deadlines
    • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work independently and within a team with limited supervision; ability to take initiative
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish based on service population

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Certification: English as a Second Language
    • 3 years’ experience in education

    Physical Demands & Work Conditions

    • This position requires standing for long periods of time 
    • Position works in a child facility and will have constantexposure to children
    • Lift, push, pull, move up to 50 lbs.
