  • Overview

    The Grant Accountant for Disaster Response is responsible for the fiscal management of Lutheran Social Services of the South (LSSS) Disaster Response, NVOAD and/or FEMA grants. The fiscal management of grants includes budget management, processing invoices and accounts payable, project time tracking, and financial reporting in accordance to GAAP, Agency policies and standards, and grant funding requirements. This is a grant funded position and the duration of the position is determined by the grant and/or funding.


    Essential Duties  

    • Responsible for grant accounting functions, including review and preparation of budgets and amendments, processing vendor payments, expense and mileage reimbursement, preparation of grant reports and financial documentation maintenance and monthly accruals of expected grant income
    • Monitor and track work hours to ensure reported work time commensurate with the requirements of the grant and Organization policies; prepare bi-weekly hourly and salary payroll reports related to the grant; prepare journal entries ensuring time tracking is properly allocated to grant projects
    • Prepare and distribute financial and cost reports to grant funding sources, as well as internal departments and stakeholders; organize and prepare federal, state, and other budgets and financial information for grant funding sources
    • Analyze trends in budget expenditures, make recommendations for streamlining costs or program improvements
    • Review reports for consistency, accuracy and compliance with funding sources
    • Review compliance reports and respond to inquiries in a timely manner
    • Oversee grant compliance and processes as it relates to grant accounting; assist in monitoring compliance with grant contracts and government guidelines, ensuring compliance with funding source and administrative guidelines by monitoring and ensuring timely receipt of revenue, accurate submission of financial reports, A-133 audit, and orderly closure of project
    • Continuously identify and implement work process improvements to streamline accounting methods and processes to ensure efficiency and effectiveness
    • Maintain calendar of grant renewals and grant reporting deadlines; provide analytical support in year-end audits, as well as audit preparation
    • Provide assistance to business partners as it relates to grant project activity and reporting
    • Maintain the security and confidentiality of all Agency and grant accounts and records
    • Other duties and special projects as assigned


    Working Relationships

    • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with management and internal and external customers to ensure program needs, goals, and objectives are being met.
    • Work closely with the Finance Manager of Disaster Response, Controller, Senior Vice President of Finance, other management, and staff to ensure the financial management of the grant is operating in a manner that is consistent with the Agency’s fiscal philosophy, Agency’s policies, and grant requirements, as well is operating efficiently and effectively
    • Work as team player and exhibit professional behavior and a positive attitude with both internal and external clients that reflects positively on the Agency and is consistent with Agency policies and practices.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or closely related field OR Associates degree with 2 years’ accounting experience required
    • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
    • Outstanding people and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, within a team environment, and with a diverse group of people
    • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to pay close attention to detail, meet deadlines, and balance competing priorities
    • Ability to provide a high level of customer service to internal and external customers using excellent and professional verbal and written communication skills
    • High proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and ERP Systems

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 2 years relevant accounting experience
    • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
    • Working knowledge of federal regulations related to federal, state, and county grants

    Physical Demands & Work Conditions

    • This position requires sitting and looking and using a computer for long periods of time
    • Lift, push, pull, move up to 25 lbs
