  • Overview

    The Grant Writer is responsible for researching and identifying appropriate funding sources at the national, state and local levels to persuasively and clearly communicate the mission of the Agency and its programs to secure government, foundation and corporate funding.      

    Responsibilities

    Essential Duties  

    • Responsible for conducting the full range of grant writing activities required to prepare, submit and manage grant proposals to government, foundation and corporate donors
    • Research, identify, and qualify appropriate funding sources and align founding sources with existing or new programs; generate funding for programs and services through timely submission of well-documented, persuasively and clearly written grant proposals; submit proposals to prospective donors that align with program and capital needs and are consistent with the Agency’s mission and strategic plan; assist with the writing of joint proposals
    • Research, identify, qualify and write proposals to fund the Agency’s mission, existing programs, new programs and program expansions; responsible for writing proposals for both unrestricted and restricted funds for program operations and program expansion
    • Work closely with the Accounting department and Agency programs’ staff to gather information necessary to report to current and prospective government, corporate and foundation donors
    • Create schedule and timelines for preparation and submission of proposals
    • Comply with all grant reporting requirements per grant guidelines; ensure report submission meets the reporting deadline; develop and maintain a tracking system of all annual proposals and grants received (awarded)
    • Maintain current records in database, including grant tracking and reporting; track statistics relevant to development and provide department with written materials necessary for donor stewardship; complete and submit interim, progress, and final reports and ongoing feedback to funders
    • Assist in monitoring public policy initiatives, public funding trends and strategies for accessing (securing) public funds
    • Manage the private and family foundation grant proposal process from baseline research to proposal submission and reporting
    • Represent the Agency at meetings, community events, conferences, and various funding opportunities as needed or when requested
    • Assist with clerical duties associates with grant management and contribute to departmental efficiencies
    • Other duties and special projects as assigned

     

    Working Relationships

    • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with management and a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Work cohesively with others in support of the common values and vision of the Agency by developing positive working relationships. Maintain and enhance relationships with current funders and increase the Agency’s visibility in the community and amongst prospective donors
    • Work closely with the department management to ensure grant proposals are completed and submitted in a manner that is effective and efficient and clearly articulate the Agency’s messaging for support and funding and meets department goals and objectives
    • Work as team player and exhibit professional behavior and a positive attitude with both internal and external clients that reflects positively on the Agency and is consistent with Agency policies and practices. Network and represent the Agency in a professional manner at all times

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Marketing or closely related field
    • Minimum of 1-year grant writing experience; relevant professional experience with an emphasis on communications may be considered in lieu of grant writing experience
    • Demonstrated ability to research, identify, and qualify restrictive and nonrestrictive funding from government, corporate and foundation funding sources
    • Demonstrated experience seeing the full grants cycle through to completion, including final reporting on outcomes
    • Strong writing skills using proper grammar; ability to write clearly and persuasively
    • Strong proofreading and editing skills
    • Working knowledge of moves management
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and be a participative member of the team to reach common goals and objectives
    • Demonstrated ability to use sound ethics and judgement based on available information
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to communicate in a persuasive manner
    • Strong people and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate, interact, and work with diverse groups of people; ability to articulate Agency goals, objectives and priorities and align them with donor values and interests
    • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
    • Strong computer skills and advanced user of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 3 years grant writing experience
    • Proficiency with relational database Raiser’s Edge

     

    Physical Demands & Work Conditions

    • This position requires sitting and looking and using a computer for long periods of time
    • Lift, push, pull, move up to 20 lbs.
