Your Mission in Action

The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment in and around the pool area. This includes monitoring swimmers, enforcing safety rules, and maintaining order on the deck and surrounding areas. The role requires adherence to all Agency policies, licensing standards, and federal, state, and local regulations regarding pool safety and sanitation. Additionally, the Lifeguard must be prepared to respond promptly to emergencies, administer first aid or CPR as needed, and contribute to the overall safety and well-being of all youths. 

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the pool, deck, and surrounding areas are safe, clean, and free of hazards by conducting regular inspections, enforcing safety protocols, and performing routine maintenance and cleaning. 
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of safety, rescue, and first aid procedures, and respond immediately to emergencies using appropriate protocols to provide necessary care. 
  • Oversee pool operations during assigned shifts, remaining vigilant and on duty until properly relieved by another lifeguard. 
  • Foster a safe and welcoming environment by adhering to Agency policies and licensing standards. 
  • Continuously monitor the pool, deck, and surrounding areas to prevent accidents and ensure patron safety. 
  • Enforce pool rules and program policies consistently and professionally 
  • Other duties and projects as assigned. 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old, as required by licensing regulations. 
  • Current lifeguard certification from YMCA, Red Cross, or another nationally recognized organization, including CPR/AED, First Aid, and lifesaving skills.
  • Strong service-oriented attitude with a demonstrated sense of responsibility. 
  • Ability to establish rapport, trust, and appropriate boundaries with children while providing excellent customer service. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with diverse groups. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to enforce policies and rules professionally. 
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and empathy while handling stressful or challenging situations. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6 months lifeguarding experience

Physical Demands & Work Conditions
  • This position requires sitting and looking and using a computer for long periods of time 
  • Position works in a child facility and has constant exposure to children 
  • Position requires frequent standing, walking and time in units/cottages which are areas where children reside 
  • Lift, push, pull, move up to 125 lbs.
