Your Mission in Action

The Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and supervising both staff and Unaccompanied Children (UC), ensuring a safe, supportive, and structured environment that meets the needs of the UC in accordance with Agency standards, state licensing standards, and other federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. The Shift Supervisor provides overall supervision of direct care staff, ensuring that all team members are properly trained, supported, and adhering to program policies. This position ensures the effective operation of the program during their shift, including managing staff performance, addressing any issues or concerns, and maintaining a high standard of care for the children under the program’s responsibility. 

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and monitor the well-being of all UC in their living spaces or common areas, ensuring their whereabouts are always known during the shift 
  • Ensure daily activities, groups, quiet times, wakeups, and bedtimes occur as scheduled and are appropriately documented 
  • Coordinate and approve staff breaks during the shift, ensuring adequate coverage at all times 
  • Receive shift change and orient new staff to the unit, conducting unit checks and ensuring smooth transitions between shifts 
  • Ensure safety and security measures are followed, including medication administration, restrictions, and precautions as needed 
  • Must assist in the evacuation of UC as needed due to inclement weather conditions, natural disasters, or other unforeseen occurrences  Document all incidents, including physical containments, escorts, transports, runaways, and staff/resident injuries, ensuring timely and accurate reporting 
  • Assist with staff supervision, training, and development, ensuring adherence to program policies and addressing performance concerns 
  • Promote positive relationships with UC, staff, and management, serving as a role model and supporting a positive, collaborative, and culturally sensitive environment 
  • Attend meetings and training, maintaining the required training hours per licensing and ORR standards 
  • Coach and support staff to ensure they have the necessary tools and resources needed to optimize performance, ensure established program goals, and achieve operational excellence 
  • Communicate with direct reports in periodic one-on-one meetings 
  • Organize and deliver regularly scheduled staff meetings to communicate present, on-going, and future updates of pertinent information, projects, and initiatives 
  • Work closely with management team to interview, hire, and onboard new employees who are strong cultural fits for Upbring 
  • Work in collaboration with leadership and the People and Culture Team to arrange training; when needed, coordinate and/or provide in-service training for staff development 
  • Regularly review employee performance, including goals and progress, to provide developmental feedback: use applicable agency development tools to facilitate growth and development in staff 
  • Draft and issue the 90-day and annual evaluations, along with supporting documentation, as per established procedures; work in collaboration with staff to set goals during evaluation periods  

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • 1-year experience working with children in a social service setting
  • 1-year experience as a supervisor in any setting
  • Bilingual in Spanish based on service population and area
  • Ability to think and react calmly and rationally in difficult and stressful situations
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse staff and resident population 
  • Experience in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques to ensure safety and well-being of residents 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Associates degree in Social Services, Human Services, or closely related field 
  • Two (2) years’ previous experience performing direct care services to children and adolescents 
  • Experience in a child welfare or residential care setting, particularly with Unaccompanied Children (UC) or similar populations 
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations governing the care of Unaccompanied Children and residential programs

Physical Demands & Work Conditions 

  • This position requires sitting and looking and using a computer for long periods of time 
  • Position works in a child facility and has constant exposure to children 
  • Position requires frequent standing, walking and time in units/cottages which are areas where children reside 
  • Lift, push, pull, move up to 125 lbs
