Your Mission in Action

The Head Start Maintenance Specialist is responsible for ensuring the Agency and facility property is appropriately maintained. This includes performing general maintenance and repair tasks for the building, grounds, and equipment. The Maintenance Specialist will also be expected to perform janitorial duties as necessary to maintain cleanliness and safety. All duties will be carried out in compliance with Agency policies and procedures, Child Care Minimum Standards, Head Start Performance Standards, as well as Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies. The role requires a proactive approach to facility upkeep to ensure a safe and supportive environment for children and staff. 

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine building maintenance, including painting, carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical work, HVAC maintenance, and changing/repairing ballasts and bulbs to ensure a safe and functional facility 
  • Clean and maintain both the interior and exterior of the facility, following proper chemical usage guidelines to meet health and safety standards 
  • Create, prioritize, manage, and complete work order requests in a timely manner to address facility needs and repair issues 
  • Oversee and manage routine and preventive maintenance schedules for equipment, facilities, and agency vehicles, ensuring ongoing operation and compliance with safety standards 
  • Monitor and manage construction projects and facility upgrades, collaborating with vendors, contractors, and sub-contractors to ensure project scopes, timelines, and quality standards are met 
  • Ensure all facility areas are hazard-free and maintain the safety and operation of emergency systems (e.g., fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, fire alarms, emergency generators) 
  • Coordinate vendor relationships and manage maintenance service agreements to ensure quality and timely completion of work 
  • Stock, inventory, and order maintenance supplies, equipment, and materials as needed for ongoing operations and projects 
  • Assist with emergency evacuations (e.g., fire, natural disasters) and perform maintenance duties after hours as necessary to minimize disruption to operations 
  • Collaborate with the Regional Director and Center Directors to ensure the efficient operation of facilities, meeting department goals and regulatory compliance requirements 
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent  
  • At least 21 years of age 
  • One (1) year of maintenance and repair experience 
  • Strong knowledge of tools, equipment, and safety standards related to building maintenance and construction trades  
  • Ability to operate maintenance machinery, power tools, and equipment safely and effectively 
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, follow instructions, and manage emergencies with or without supervision 

Preferred Qualifications 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations 
  • HVAC Certification and three (3) years of general contractor experience (or one (1year with certification in a preferred area) 
  • Working knowledge of reading blueprints and managing construction projects 
  •  Strong ability to perform maintenance and repair tasks while adhering to safety standards and operational guidelines

Physical Demands & Work Conditions
  • This position will require constant bending, kneeling, twisting, stretching, and reaching, climbing up and down ladders, frequent walking, occasional sitting, and standing for long periods of time 
  • Position works in a facility with and around children on a regular basis 
  • Lift, push, pull, move up to 50 lbs. and use equipment and/or work with other team members to move, push, pull, lift anything over 50 lbs.
